A plugin manager scans your computer and lists every audio plugin you have installed, so you can find, update and organize them in one place. If you work on both Mac and Windows, the main options are Sonisto (free plan), PluginHub (one-time purchase from $39.99), ProducerGrid (free plan; Pro from €19.99 a year), KVR Studio Manager (free, in public beta) and Plugoff (free for now). VST Manager, Plugin Station, PlugPane and Pluginize! are Mac-only. OwlPlug is free, open source and also runs on Linux.

How to choose a plugin manager

  • Your computers. Mac and Windows together narrows it to Sonisto, PluginHub, ProducerGrid, KVR Studio Manager, Plugoff and OwlPlug.
  • Updates. Decide whether you want to be told about updates or have the app install them for you.
  • How you pay. Free, pay-what-you-want, one-time or subscription: all four exist in this list.
  • Serial keys. If you keep license keys in a spreadsheet today, pick an app with a vault.
  • Clean-up. If disk space or slow DAW scans are the problem, look at duplicate detection and offloading.

Questions

Is there a free plugin manager for Windows?

Yes. Sonisto has a free plan for Windows and Mac (one computer, one scan a month). ProducerGrid has a free plan with daily limits, KVR Studio Manager is free (donationware) and still in beta, Plugoff is free for now, and OwlPlug is free and open source.

Which plugin managers check for plugin updates?

Sonisto (10 plugins on its free plan, all on paid plans), PluginHub, ProducerGrid, Plugin Station, KVR Studio Manager and PlugPane all tell you when an update is available. PluginHub and PlugPane can also download and install updates from inside the app.

Does a plugin manager change my installed plugins?

Scanning alone does not. Some apps can also act on your files when you ask them to: PluginHub and ProducerGrid can uninstall, PlugPane can move duplicates to the Bin, and Plugoff and Pluginize! move unused plugins to another folder. Sonisto’s scan only reads what is installed.

Where should I keep plugin serial numbers?

Sonisto (on its Basic and Pro plans), PluginHub, ProducerGrid, VST Manager and PlugPane each have a vault for license keys. Sonisto, PluginHub and ProducerGrid encrypt them; VST Manager syncs them through iCloud Keychain.
