PluginHub alternatives, and how it compares with Plugin Station

Checked on 2 November 2026 by Sonisto, which makes one of the apps on this page. Every fact about another app comes from its developer’s own website, linked below, and every price is as that site listed it that day.

PluginHub is a paid-once plugin manager for Mac and Windows: $39.99 for two machines, with three free scans to try it. Its strength is updates. It checks 357 vendors and can download and install updates inside the app for nearly 60 of them. People look for an alternative when they want a free version that keeps working after three scans, or something else alongside the list of plugins. The main ones are Sonisto, ProducerGrid, KVR Studio Manager, Plugoff and OwlPlug.

How to choose

You want updates installed inside the app

Stay with PluginHub. It checks 357 vendors by its own count, and nothing runs until you say so. Sonisto and KVR Studio Manager tell you what is out of date and leave the install to you.

You want a free version that lasts

Sonisto’s free plan keeps one computer and one scan a month with no end date, ProducerGrid’s has daily limits, OwlPlug is free and open source, KVR Studio Manager is donationware. Plugoff is free for now.

You keep buying plugins and want them to come with the app

A yearly Sonisto Pro subscription comes with 12 plugins to keep on the day you join. PluginHub sells no plugins; it is a one-time purchase and that is its appeal.

You mostly want a faster DAW

Plugoff is built for that: it moves plugins you do not use out of your DAW’s scan path, to a folder or an external drive, and back. PluginHub can hide and park plugins too.

PluginHub vs Plugin Station

PluginHub runs on Mac and Windows; Plugin Station on Mac only. PluginHub is one-time only, from $39.99 for two machines. Plugin Station is a subscription from $4.99 a month or a one-time licence from $149.99 for one computer. PluginHub installs updates inside the app for nearly 60 vendors; Plugin Station alerts you and points you to them. Plugin Station’s own ground is System Profiles you can share before a session, storage views and troubleshooting help. Both can compare two setups.

Where Sonisto fits

Sonisto’s free plan covers one computer, one scan a month and update notifications for 10 plugins. Basic adds a second computer, 20 scans a month, update notifications for every plugin, a vault for serial keys, comparing computers and exporting your library. Pro raises that to 10 computers and unlimited scans. A yearly Pro subscription comes with 12 plugins to keep on the day you join.

Sonisto tells you an update exists and links to the installer; it does not install updates for you, apart from freeware and a few selected brands. It has no tags and no way to switch a plugin off, and it can only uninstall plugins it manages itself.

Questions

Is PluginHub a subscription?

No. Its site says buy once, no subscription: $39.99 for 2 machines, $69.99 for 5 and $129.99 for 10, with free updates and Mac and Windows on one licence.

Is there a free alternative to PluginHub?

Yes. Sonisto and ProducerGrid have free plans, OwlPlug is free and open source, KVR Studio Manager is donationware and Plugoff is free for now. We found none that lists installing updates across as many vendors.

Does PluginHub install updates itself?

It downloads from each vendor’s own server and installs in a batch you approve. Its site says that Install Manager covers nearly 60 vendors and over 700 plugins; for the rest of its 357 vendors it tells you an update exists.

Can I use more than one plugin manager?

Yes. They read what is installed. Check the ones that move or uninstall files before letting two of them act on the same folders.
