Plugin managers for Windows, compared

Checked on 2 November 2026 by Sonisto, which makes one of the apps on this page. Every fact about another app comes from its developer’s own website, linked below, and every price is as that site listed it that day.

Six well-known plugin managers run on Windows: Sonisto, PluginHub, ProducerGrid, KVR Studio Manager, Plugoff and OwlPlug. Four well-known ones do not: Plugin Station, VST Manager, PlugPane and Pluginize! are Mac apps. For installing updates inside the app, PluginHub. For a free list of everything with update notifications, Sonisto or KVR Studio Manager. For moving unused plugins out of your DAW’s way, Plugoff. For free and open source, OwlPlug.

Plugindex also runs on Windows, but it is a plugin browser and launcher: its site does not list update checks or a licence vault, so it is not counted in the six below. All the managers side by side.

Which one for what

A list of every plugin across brands

All six do this. Windows spreads plugins across several folders per format, so the value is in seeing them in one place without opening each folder.

Knowing what is out of date

PluginHub checks 357 vendors. KVR Studio Manager compares with the KVR database. Sonisto gives update notifications for 10 plugins on its free plan and every plugin on Basic and Pro. ProducerGrid shows installed against current versions.

Installing updates inside the app

PluginHub, for nearly 60 vendors. The others tell you and leave the installer to you, apart from Sonisto’s installers for freeware and a few selected brands.

A faster DAW

Plugoff moves plugins you do not use to a vault folder or an external drive and brings them back when you need them.

Serial keys and logins

Sonisto (Basic and Pro), PluginHub and ProducerGrid have an encrypted vault.

A Mac in the studio as well

All six also run on Mac. PluginHub’s licence covers both. Sonisto’s Basic covers two computers and lets you compare them, and Pro covers 10.

Windows versions they ask for

PluginHub lists Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. ProducerGrid and KVR Studio Manager list Windows 10 or newer. Plugoff and OwlPlug offer a Windows download and list no version on the pages we read. Default folders for each format are in our guide to where plugins are stored.

Where Sonisto fits

Sonisto’s free plan covers one computer, one scan a month and update notifications for 10 plugins. Basic adds a second computer, 20 scans a month, update notifications for every plugin, a vault for serial keys, comparing computers and exporting your library. Pro raises that to 10 computers and unlimited scans. A yearly Pro subscription comes with 12 plugins to keep on the day you join.

Sonisto tells you an update exists and links to the installer; it does not install updates for you, apart from freeware and a few selected brands. It has no tags and no way to switch a plugin off, and it can only uninstall plugins it manages itself.

Questions

Is there a free plugin manager for Windows?

Yes. Sonisto has a free plan, ProducerGrid has a free plan with daily limits, OwlPlug is free and open source, KVR Studio Manager is donationware, and Plugoff is free for now.

Is Plugin Station available on Windows?

No. Its FAQ says it does not support Windows, and offers an email sign-up for news of a Windows version.

Does a plugin manager change my installed plugins?

A scan only reads them. Some apps can act on files when you ask: PluginHub and ProducerGrid can uninstall, and Plugoff moves unused plugins to another folder.

Do these work with FL Studio, Ableton Live and Cubase?

Yes. They read the plugin folders on your computer, not your DAW, so any DAW that uses the same plugins is covered.
