OwlPlug alternatives for producers on Pro Tools, Mac and Windows

Checked on 2 November 2026 by Sonisto, which makes one of the apps on this page. Every fact about another app comes from its developer’s own website, linked below, and every price is as that site listed it that day.

OwlPlug is free and open source, runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, needs no account and works with the folders you already have. If that is what you want, keep it. People look elsewhere for three reasons: its format table lists VST2, VST3, AU and LV2 and no AAX, so Pro Tools plugins are not on it; its site describes finding and installing plugins and does not list checking every brand for updates; and it lists no vault for serial keys.

How to choose

You use Pro Tools

Sonisto, PluginHub, ProducerGrid, KVR Studio Manager and Plugoff all list AAX.

You want to know what is out of date

PluginHub checks 357 vendors, KVR Studio Manager compares with the KVR database, and Sonisto gives update notifications for 10 plugins on its free plan and every plugin on Basic and Pro.

You want your serial keys in one place

Sonisto (Basic and Pro), PluginHub and ProducerGrid have an encrypted vault.

You run Linux, or want open source

Stay with OwlPlug. It is the only app here that runs on Linux, the only one here with LV2 on its format table, and its code is on GitHub under GPL-3.0.

You want to find plugins missing from a project

OwlPlug scans Ableton Live, Reaper and Studio One projects and flags what is missing, which most of the others here do not list. ProducerGrid also reads projects.

What OwlPlug does that the others do not

Its registries let you browse and install plugins from inside the app, including from any distributor that publishes a compatible registry. It stores everything locally, needs no account and leaves your folder layout alone. If those matter most to you, keep it.

Where Sonisto fits

Sonisto’s free plan covers one computer, one scan a month and update notifications for 10 plugins. Basic adds a second computer, 20 scans a month, update notifications for every plugin, a vault for serial keys, comparing computers and exporting your library. Pro raises that to 10 computers and unlimited scans. A yearly Pro subscription comes with 12 plugins to keep on the day you join.

Sonisto tells you an update exists and links to the installer; it does not install updates for you, apart from freeware and a few selected brands. It has no tags and no way to switch a plugin off, and it can only uninstall plugins it manages itself.

Questions

Is OwlPlug really free?

Yes. Its FAQ says free and open source under GPL-3.0, with no subscription, no trial limits and no premium tier.

Does OwlPlug support AAX?

Its format table lists VST2, VST3, AU and LV2 on Windows, macOS and Linux. AAX is not on it, so check its site if that changes.

Which alternative also runs on Linux?

None of the others on this page. OwlPlug is the one.

Can I run OwlPlug and another manager together?

Yes. OwlPlug’s FAQ says your existing setup is never touched by a scan, and Sonisto’s scan only reads what is installed.
